Insecurities +

Artists Research-

About my project-

In this project I wanted to explore the human body and look  at what people find insecure about their bodies. This was also a personal issue to me and I wanted to express my feeling on how i feel about myself. I personally feel that it  was a good idea for me to explore this as I feel like it's important for people to understand what it means to feel insecure about themselves. I also thought it was a good idea because I wanted to show people that they aren't alone with how they feel about  themselves.

I firstly started looking at different artists that studied on the body and face and how they expressed themselves through their art. I explored lots of styles or art and I just researched  the artists I found most interested in.

Henrietta Harris- Since graduating in 2006 with a bachelor in fine arts from auckland university, she had soon built up a name for herself with major commissions such as vanity fair (france), BITE magazine and many other places in New Zealand. Her paintings often involve portraiture and has a particular meaning to her work which is identity. I personally think her work is particularly interesting because of the obscure and misplaced  brush stroke across the face "by hiding the facial features." I also think it has a meaning of people feeling insecure about their facial features by blocking and making marks with paint on parts of their face. this person links to my personal project and I feel inspired to use her concept of mark making over her realism paintings she creates.

Lisa kokin- lisa kokin some of her past commissions include T- magazine, New York times and Tiffany & Co. She mainly likes to work with different materials to create sculpture like art work such as cotton thread and wool and collages them together to make big pieces of art work. I really enjoy looking at her work and i like her "sewn found photos" project. The story behind this particular project is that she was intigued by other peoples photographic recordings of  their lives both for the genetic quality they posses. I really like  the idea and the feeling it gives me when i look at  her work it almost tells a story with all the photographs she uses and finding lost memories and their identities and stitching them back together.

Elly Smallwood- currently still working still working and living in Toronto Canada, her work is most popular in the USA and travelling round america and Canada promoting her work in exhibitions. She has a very unique style of painting which  is painting portraits with a loose, dry  brush strokes. She uses lots of colour and creates textured work  done with palette knives and even large paint brushes. I really enjoy her style  of painting because I get the sense of emotions and      insecurities from her paintings.Throughout her painting career she's had similar style and ideas.

Jenny Saville- Jenny Saville is a british contemporary painter, she is mostly known for her large scale paintings  of nude women and portraits of the younger generation. Before becoming well known, she studied at the Glasgow school of Art from 1988-1992. Jenny Saville was inspired by artists such as Pablo Picasso, an artist that she sees as a painter that made the subject as if "they were solidly there...not fleeting." After  researching and learning about Jenny  Saville's work, I found her quite interesting on how she portray's the human body. Also looking closely at the textures and  colours she uses which i found quite unique as she would try to stay away from plain, skin tone colours and  would use  colours like red and yellow to highlight and create  shadow. I found  this particular artist inspire me for my future  development.

Davide Cambria-  Born  in 1986, Messina, Italy) He is a self-taught painter based in London. Through Saatchi Art, his work has become part of private collections across Europe, United States, Asia and Australia. I really enjoyed researching this particular artist because of the style of paintings he creates as  they almost look unfinished. The style of  painting is quite similar to the other artists that iv'e researched, for example; the use of different and the meaning behind his art. He mostly concentrates on the facial features but mainly the eyes. He would  make his work look detailed and realistic but "loose" and expressive. All these paintings iv'e researched they all seem to look almost "sad" and  very emotional. This Artist has also inspired me for my future development.

Ryan Hewett- Hewett was  born in 1979 in South Africa, Cape Town. Hewett began his career drawing with pencil, eventually graduating from draughtsmanship to oils and developing a highly expressive style with sculptural and textured surface. Hewett is mostly  interested in figures and portraits of  famous and historic people. The way he paints is very unique and he describes himself as an abstract expressionist   painter. His paintings are notable for their flesh tones, and are thick with florid reds and lead white. He is very  well known in london and new york.
